Student teams from New Zealand, Malaysia and China stand out to win Autodesk PANORAMA – Asia Pacific Design Challenge 2010

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, December 10, 2010 – After four days of intense competition amongst 19 student teams at the Autodesk PANORAMA Design Challenge Bootcamp, teams from New Zealand, Malaysia and China have emerged as overall in their respective categories. Co-organized by Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), the competition was conceptualized by Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a world leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software.
For the 3D Animation category, Team Three Amigos of Massey University (New Zealand) walked away with the first prize. In the Innovation and Design category, Team Ar.Madilo of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Malaysia) won the prize for Architecture, Engineering and Construction, while Team Z-Tech with students from South China University of Technology and Da Lian University of Technology (China) won the prize for Manufacturing.

The Autodesk PANORAMA – Asia Pacific Design Challenge 2010 saw over 3,000 submissions from ten countries in Asia – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. 19 student teams were shortlisted to compete at the Autodesk PANORAMA Animation Bootcamp 2010 held at the MSC Innovation Centre in Cyberjaya from December 7 to 10, 2010. There, they were mentored by industry professionals from Addeem Multimedia, Lucasfilm Singapore, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, Titane Design Consultant, and HOK Architects, who imparted invaluable skills and coached the students to refine their original submissions for the final judging round.

In addition to providing the finalist teams with regional exposure, the winning teams’ original productions will be profiled on the Autodesk PANORAMA website, and vignettes of the finalists’ experience at the Autodesk PANORAMA Design Challenge Bootcamp will be aired on Animax in January 2011.
Team Three Amigos of Massey University (New Zealand), who won the 3D Animation category was mentored by Sam Lei Wong, Head of CG & VFX / CG Producer at Addeem Multimedia in Malaysia with more than 13 years of experience in VFZ, Motion Design, Games and Animation series.
Team Z-Tech of South China University of Technology and Da Lian University of Technology (China), winner of the Innovation and Design category for Manufacturing was coached by Alain Chan, co-founder of Titane Design Consultants, who has been actively involved in product design and the development of commercial and innovative products ready for the mass consumer market for the last 14 years.
Winner of the Innovation and Design category for Architecture, Engineering and Construction, Team Ar.Madilo of Universiti Tekonologi Malaysia (Malaysia) was coached by Lee Miller who is the Vice President and the Director of BIM Services for HOK Architects and has worked in the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry for nearly 15 years.
“PANORAMA was a rewarding and eye-opening experience for us. Working with our mentors at the bootcamp helped us hone our skills and take our work to the next level in a matter of days. We are very grateful to Autodesk and MDeC for this special opportunity to be coached by the best in the industry,” said Zou Rui and Chong Wan Hui, representatives from Team Z-Tech and Team Ar.Madilo respectively, Winners in the Design and Innovation Category. “The competition was an unforgettable experience for us, and we look forward to applying what we’ve learnt in our professional careers. The exposure and new skills we picked up have most definitely equipped us better for a professional career in animation, and we are very excited to be able to share our final product with the world,” Shinji Dawson from Team Three Amigos, Winner in the 3D Animation Category added.
About Autodesk PANORAMA – Asia Pacific Design Challenge
Now in its second year, the Autodesk PANORAMA — Asia Pacific Design Challenge is an annual contest for young animators and design students to test their skills and creative mettle against fellow peers.
Conceptualized by Autodesk, the contest is co-organized with public and private sector partners and open to students aged 18 and over in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, New Zealand and Singapore. Participant teams are invited to submit original animated short films and digital design projects created with Autodesk software for a chance to be selected to represent their country at the finals of the contest – the Autodesk Design Challenge Bootcamp. The Bootcamp will see teams refine their submissions under the mentorship of professionals from industry-leading companies before a final judging round to choose the winners, who will have their original designs profiled on the Autodesk Website.
